Furnace Making Loud Noise

A thud at ignition or a howl from the fan means something is straining every cycle, which is easier to fix now than after it breaks.

What a pro does

The sound points at which half of the system to open first. A thud when the burner lights means fuel pooled a moment before igniting, and that pressure spike works on the heat exchanger every cycle, so burner condition and gas pressure get checked before anyone decides it's normal. Squeals and howls come from the air side, usually a dry bearing, a dust-loaded wheel, or an inducer motor on its way out. Ducts running through unconditioned attic or crawl space also expand and pop hard enough to be mistaken for equipment trouble. Listening at each component beats diagnosing from a description over the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Bad enough to schedule. Repeated delayed ignition fatigues the heat exchanger, and once it cracks the conversation shifts from noise to combustion safety.
It can. Metal expanding as warm air hits it bangs against framing, and the noise carries through the whole house even though the equipment is fine.
Most often air being pulled hard through a restriction, or a bearing running dry. Both are worth catching before the motor takes the strain and fails outright.
Short runs to characterize the sound are reasonable. Continuous grinding or knocking is a good reason to shut it down and use whatever backup heat is available.
